RationaleforRecommendation

Rationale for Recommendation: The primary purpose of the grant is to educate the public regarding the dangers of impaired driving, enforce impaired driving laws on the roadway, and improve the Sacramento Police Department’s effectiveness through training and development of new strategies. The grant will support services/supplies, travel/training, and overtime for driving-under-the -influence (DUI) enforcement and public education initiatives.

The most recent California Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) Crash Rankings reveal that between 2022 and 2023, Sacramento’s overall ranking slightly reduced (from 13 to 12) when compared to the 14 other California cities with populations of 250,000 or more, with the lowest numbers ranking “highest” or “worst.” The below tables demonstrate the year-to-year change in the number of victims killed or injured in traffic crashes and the number of crashes, as reported by OTS.
