Description/Analysis

IssueDetail

Issue Detail: North Natomas Jibe is continuing to work with the North Natomas community to establish a name for an unnamed trail running parallel to and east of I-5, currently between Del Paso and San Juan. The community trail naming effort offers many benefits along the shared-use path, including supporting signage and wayfinding, enabling mapping, connecting to shopping and services, and increasing awareness. This effort was initially brought to the commission on August 20, 2026, for feedback on the list of potential names inspired by local flora and fauna including:

•                     Sandhill Crane

•                     Snowy Egret

•                     Burrowing Owl

•                     Lark Sparrow

Based on stakeholder feedback since the previous meeting, Jibe also added “Natomas Flyway” as a name option and determined that the preferred ending for the chosen name would be “Trail.” Jibe gathered input from stakeholders representing the following groups: Council Districts 1 & 3; trail users, including bicycle and pedestrian user groups; naturalists and conservation groups; North Natomas Community Coalition; and adjacent property owners, schools, businesses, and homeownwer associations.

Jibe hosted an online survey on their website from September 1 - September 15, 2026, which allowed community members to vote for their preferred name option. The survey resulted in 440 total responses. “Snowy Egret” earned the most votes in the final tally, with 174 votes. “Natomas Flyway” came in second place, with 148 votes.

Based on the results of the community survey, the recommended name for the unnamed shared use path is “Snowy Egret Trail.”

PolicyConsiderations

Policy Considerations: Council Resolution 2008-112 established the Policy for Naming City Facilities, including shared use paths. This effort is consistent with the guidelines and procedures outlined in the policy, which states that parks and parkways should be named with input from the community and suggested consideration of native flora and fauna names as options.
