Additional Description/Analysis
IssueDetail
Issue Detail: On February 12, 2024, the Sacramento Community Police Review Commission’s (the “Commission”) approved its 2024 work plan which included a goal of collaborating with Sacramento Police Department (“SPD”) to formalize a community outreach process and provide recommendations to City Council for future changes of Military Equipment Use (“MEU”) General Order 410.06, as well as holding up to three community engagement meetings to focus on other areas of public interest in policing, including:
● SPD Community Engagement Programs and Relationship-Building Initiatives
● Community Policing Techniques and Non-Emergency Response
● Traffic Safety Enforcement
● Community Violence Prevention and Intervention
● Civilian Oversight of Law Enforcement
On July 22, 2024, the Commission hosted a community meeting on the MEU policy. On August 12, 2024, the Commission discussed options for additional community engagement meetings to be held before the end of 2024. During this discussion, a motion was passed for the Commission to hold one additional community engagement meeting in October 2024, collaborate with SPD in holding this meeting, and narrowed the focus to three potential topics:
● Community Policing Techniques and Non-Emergency Response
● Traffic Safety Enforcement
● Community Violence Prevention and Intervention.
From this conversation, the Commissioners approved a motion for the Chair and Vice Chair to work with the Assistant City Manager and SPD to determine the topic, format, date, and location of a Community Engagement Meeting in October. Through this collaboration, the date of the next Community Engagement meeting has been confirmed for Wednesday, October 23, 2024, at the Maple Neighborhood Center from 6-8pm. The topic will be Traffic Safety Enforcement.
This item provides an opportunity for the Chair and Vice Chair to reflect on July’s Community Engagement Forum and provide feedback on it and the upcoming plans for the next community engagement meeting and obtain additional feedback and support in its planning.
