Issue Detail: The purpose of this presentation is to provide the Sacramento Youth Commission with an update on the City of Sacramento’s annual Earth Day clean up and beautification events, as well as to invite the Commissioners to participate and help promote the events.
Earth Day is a global event with people around the world cleaning up their communities and advocating in support of environmental protection. Earth Day started in 1970 after a series of environmental disasters struck across the country, from oil spills in Santa Barbara to a river catching fire in Ohio. As a result, U.S. Senators and community activists alike came together to establish Earth Day and energize youth nationwide.
The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability (OCAS); Department of Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment (YPCE); Department of Utilities, and the Community Engagement Team partner annually to host Earth Day clean up and beautification events. In 2025, this included nine events with over 300 volunteers who collected approximately 12,000 lbs. of trash and planted 230 plants.
The City of Sacramento’s 2026 Earth Day clean up and beatification events will take place on Saturday, April 11 from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. There will be multiple simultaneous events - at least one event in every Council district - giving residents an opportunity to support the City’s climate action goals, protect our planet, and take meaningful action in their neighborhood parks. Events will include trash pickup, planting, and mulching.
More information can be found on the City’s Earth Day website: cityofsacramento.gov/earthday. Individuals, families, and community groups are welcome to volunteer. If you're interested in volunteering, pre-register on the YPCE Better Impact platform (https://bttr.im/oog2i) to be notified when sign-ups open and to explore other tree planting and park volunteer opportunities. Please note that minors under 16 must be accompanied by an adult.
Supporting youth involvement and leadership in advancing climate action within the city is an important element of OCAS’s strategic plan. OCAS seeks to engage youth in projects whenever possible, including through volunteer opportunities like these Earth Day events.
