Description/Analysis
Issue Detail: The Crocker Art Museum’s Chief Curator, Executive Director, Collection and Acquisitions Committee, and the Crocker Art Museum Co-Trustees propose deaccessioning the works on the list that is included with this staff report.
Policy Considerations: The action recommended is consistent with the Crocker Art Museum’s Collection Management Policy, which has been approved by City Council.
Each artwork from the attached list should be deaccessioned because it meets one or more of the following criteria set forth in the Collection Management Policy (Section 11(A)(2) [Deaccession and Disposition]):
a) The item is inconsistent with the mission of the Museum or is unrelated to the collecting areas;
b) The item lacks historical, art historical, and/or artistic merit;
c) It has been established that the item is inauthentic or has failed to retain its identity;
d) The item is redundant;
e) The Museum lacks the ability or resources to properly care for, conserve, store and/or exhibit the item;
f) The Museum is repatriating the item or returning the item to its rightful owner(s);
g) The Museum is returning the item to the donor, or the donor’s heirs or assigns, to fulfill donor restrictions related to the item that the Museum can no longer satisfy;
h) The item presents a hazard to people or other collection items; or
i) The item has been lost or stolen and has not been recovered after three consecutive inventories.
Economic Impacts: None
Environmental Considerations: This report concerns administrative activities that will not have a significant effect on the environment and is exempt from CEQA review [CEQA Guidelines Sections 15061(b)(3); 15378(b)(2).
Sustainability: Not Applicable
Commission/Committee Action: The Collections and Acquisitions Committee passed a motion on December 4, 2018, authorizing the deaccession of artworks on the list that is attached to this staff report. Subsequently, the Co-Trustees of the Crocker Art Museum passed a motion authorizing the deaccession of artworks on the attached list on March 28, 2019.
Rationale for Recommendation: The Crocker Art Museum is deaccessioning 40 works. The Museum has more than 19,000 objects in the collection. Deaccessioning is a process that the Crocker Art Museum conducts every few years or as needed. The Collection Management Policy provides that all items approved for deaccession by the Co-Trustees of the Crocker Art Museum shall be presented to the City Council for a final decision.
Financial Considerations: All proceeds from the sale of works of art are deposited into restricted Crocker Art Museum accounts for purchase of art and are not deposited with the City.
