Issue Detail: The purpose of this presentation is to provide the Sacramento Youth Commission with an update on the City of Sacramento's annual Earth Day clean up and beautification events, as well as to invite the Commissioners to participate and help promote the events.
Earth Day is a global event with people around the world cleaning up their communities and advocating in support of environmental protection. Earth Day started in 1970 after a series of environmental disasters struck across the country, from oil spills in Santa Barbara to a river catching fire in Ohio. As a result, U.S. Senators and community activists alike came together to establish Earth Day and energize youth nationwide.
The Office of Climate Action and Sustainability (OCAS); Department of Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment (YPCE); Department of Utilities, and the Community Engagement Team partner annually to host Earth Day clean up and beautification events. In 2025, this included nine events with over 300 volunteers who collected approximately 12,000 lbs. of trash and planted 230 plants.
