Description/Analysis

Issue Detail: The Front Street Shelter has been awarded a PetSmart Charities Grant in the amount of $100,000 to help fund their Ending Homelessness for People and Pets Program. For the past six years, the Front Street Animal Shelter's program has provided free services to pet owners experiencing homelessness at no charge to the pet owner. This past year, the City of Sacramento opened its first no-barrier human shelter for 200 people, their pets, and their possessions. Previous and concurrent to the efforts at the homeless shelter, the Front Street Shelter paid for all product costs associated with the veterinarian assigned to the Sacramento Police Department Impact Team. The funds from this grant will be used to help offset the some of the costs associated with this program.

Policy Considerations: The recommendations in this report are in accordance with Resolution 2018-0235, Section 11, which requires City Council approval to establish an operating grant of $100,000 or more.
