Issue Detail: On February 16, 2021, the City Council adopted Resolution No. 2021-0042, establishing the Vision Zero School Safety Plan as the guiding framework for safety improvements near 20 schools throughout the City. All public and charter elementary, middle and high schools were considered with the initial Vision Zero School Safety Study, with 20 chosen based on the number of collisions within a 1/4 mile of the school site and consideration of geographic equity used to ensure that the safety assessments were accessible to families and schools across Sacramento.

The Vision Zero School Safety Study was a collaborative effort to document conditions for students walking, bicycling, taking transit or being dropped off and to identify potential infrastructure and operational barriers to safe and equitable travel to school. As part of the study, walk audits were conducted at each of the 20 schools and discussions were facilitated among the participants to review observations and discuss possible improvements.
