Issue Detail: The Summer @ City Hall (S@CH) program offers an engaging learning experience for incoming high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The S@CH program hosted in-person at the City of Sacramento's City Hall where participants are immersed in local government firsthand and gain valuable insights on how to become an active citizen in their community.
The City of Sacramento Department of Youth, Parks, and Community Enrichment has partnered with Natomas Unified, Twin Rivers Unified and Sacramento City Unified School Districts for over 12 years to bring this program to life.
Throughout the program, students are supported by city staff, credentials teachers, and Peer Mentors. The instructional team delivers a comprehensive daily curriculum grounded in youth development principles and covers topics such as civic engagement, activism, government structure, and much more.
At the conclusion of the program, students present an advocacy project (Project City Hall) which is developed in smaller peer cohorts and presented to the Mayor and City Council. In addition, each participant completes an internship where they are assigned to work with various city departments, charter offices, local non-profits, other government agencies, or youth programs.
