Description/Analysis

Issue Detail: The Police Department requests authorization to accept a federal grant award of $795,286 from the US Department of Justice, Bureau of Justice Assistance via the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economy Security (CARES) Act. These funds have been allocated for the City of Sacramento to support costs for officer overtime, personal protective equipment, supplies, and travel/training. Allocations were determined using the formula from the Fiscal Year 2019 Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) allocations, which was based on violent crime. Under the program, allowable expenses incurred between January 20, 2020 and January 31, 2022 may be reimbursed via the grant.

Policy Considerations: The recommendations contained in this report are consistent with City Council Resolution 2019-0248, Section 11, which requires City Council authorization to accept grant funding when the award is equal to or greater than $250,000.

Economic Impact: None.

Environmental Considerations: Not applicable.

Sustainability: Not applicable.

Commission/Committee Action: Not applicable.

Rationale for Recommendation: This grant provides supplemental funding to the City, via its police department, to respond to the ongoing coronavirus public health emergency.
