Description/Analysis

Issue Detail: The Department of Utilities (DOU) has an ongoing need to purchase Coffing Electrical Wire Rope Hoists to ensure proper operation of its drainage pump stations.

DOU operates 104 pump stations throughout the City. There are filter screens that protect the pumps from debris such as tree limbs or other large debris that enter the drainage system. The screens ensure that debris is not allowed to reach the pumps which could lead to serious and sometimes catastrophic pump failure. The hoists are used to position the screens for cleaning. If a screen was to clog, it could keep storm drainage from flowing into the pump station and lead to a potential surcharge in the collection system, street flooding, or possible collapse of the screen itself.

Policy Considerations: City Council approval is required for contracts of $100,000 or more.

Environmental Considerations: The Community Development Department, Environmental Services Manager has determined that the proposed activity is not a project pursuant to the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA).
